Manoeuvring & Stabilisation

Sleipner

Thrusters and Vector Fins™ stabilisation.

Sleipner, formerly known as Side-Power, is a marine manufacturer of bow and stern thrusters and Vector Fins stabilisers. Its systems address two distinct problems on the water: precise control at low speed when berthing, and roll stability that keeps a vessel comfortable underway and at anchor. The brand is associated with manoeuvring and stabilisation engineering for both leisure and commercial craft.

Thrusters are the part of the range most owners encounter first. A bow thruster, and where fitted a stern thruster, applies lateral force at the ends of the hull so the boat can be pushed sideways independently of the main propulsion. The practical effect is that crosswind, current and tight marina spaces become manageable, and a single person can bring a vessel alongside that would otherwise need several hands. Sleipner builds these systems for a wide span of hull sizes and offers them in different drive configurations to suit the installation and the power available on board.

Vector Fins stabilisers tackle the comfort side of the equation. Active fins counter roll by generating corrective lift as the hull moves through the water, reducing the side-to-side motion that causes fatigue and seasickness. For boats that spend long passages at sea or hours lying at anchor in a swell, stabilisation changes how the vessel is used rather than simply how it handles. Sleipner positions thrusters and stabilisers as complementary parts of a single manoeuvring-and-comfort strategy rather than isolated add-ons.

For installers and boatbuilders, the appeal is a coherent system from one source. Specifying thrusters and stabilisation from a single manufacturer simplifies integration, control interfaces and the inevitable conversation about spares and service. PowerSol holds the range and supports specification, installation queries and after-sales across Southern Africa, which matters for equipment that is fitted deep in the hull and expected to work reliably for years.

Why specify Sleipner

  • A single source for both manoeuvring and stabilisation, simplifying integration and control across the two systems
  • Bow and stern thruster options to suit a range of hull sizes, drive types and onboard power constraints
  • Vector Fins active stabilisation to reduce roll underway and at anchor, not just docking control
  • Local PowerSol distribution and support across Southern Africa, covering specification, supply and after-sales for leisure and commercial vessels

Sleipner — FAQs

What is the difference between a bow thruster and a stern thruster?

Both apply sideways force to the hull at low speed, but at opposite ends. A bow thruster moves the front of the boat sideways; a stern thruster moves the rear. Fitting both gives independent control over each end, which makes turning in place and holding position against wind or current far easier. The right combination depends on hull size, weight distribution and how the boat is berthed, and PowerSol can advise on specification.

Do Vector Fins stabilisers work when the boat is not moving?

Active fin stabilisation is most effective with water flowing past the fins, so it performs strongly underway. Stabilising a stationary vessel at anchor is a separate and more demanding requirement; whether a given configuration addresses it depends on the system specified. Discuss your intended use, whether mainly passage-making or extended time at anchor, with PowerSol so the stabilisation solution matches how the boat will be used.

Can a thruster or stabiliser be retrofitted to an existing boat?

Many vessels are candidates for retrofit, but it depends on hull form, available space, structural considerations and the electrical or hydraulic power on board. Thrusters need a tunnel or mounting through the hull, and stabilisers need appendages and control integration, so retrofit is an engineering exercise rather than a bolt-on. PowerSol can help assess feasibility and identify the appropriate Sleipner system for your vessel and installer.
